A desk drop is a small, individually mailed gift used to open or restart a conversation — the physical equivalent of a well-targeted email, and roughly as cheap once you account for what a meeting is worth.

The constraints are unusual: it has to ship in a standard carton to hundreds of separate addresses, arrive intact after several days in transit, and cost little enough that a low response rate still works. That rules out most of the gift catalogue and leaves snack packs, cookie and brownie boxes, branded popcorn and printed candy tins.

What makes them work is not the gift. It is the card.
